• Flashback Friday: Bad Religion – “American Jesus”

Seeing the “American Jesus” video on MTV was my first introduction to Bad Religion. I was instantly a fan. They were one of the few punk bands that I was into that actually got played on MTV. I have every Bad Religion album, and they have a lot. The band formed in 1979, and are still going strong putting out a new album every couple of years.

  • Flashback Friday: Veruca Salt–“Seether”

Veruca Salt were one of my favorite 90s bands. They are still around, but really haven’t been the same since Nina Gordon left. American Thighs, and Eight Arms to Hold You are amazing albums, too bad their newer stuff isn’t quite as great. I was lucky enough to see them twice in concert in the 90s. Seeing Nina Gordon crowd surf and almost losing her pants remains one of my great memories from the many great shows I have seen at First Ave.

  • Friday Flashback: Matthew Sweet–“Girlfriend”

Matthew Sweet released the Girlfriend album in 1991. I didn’t discover it until 1993 when my college roommate introduced him to me. I fell in love instantly, and then that year Matthew Sweet released another great album, Altered Beast. I’ve been a fan ever since despite his last few albums not being as strong, but all his 90s stuff is great. To this day, Girlfriend is my favorite road tripping album.

His latest album, Modern Art, was just released this past Tuesday. I haven’t listened to is much yet, but it will be in my rotation for the next few weeks.

  • Flashback Friday: R.E.M–“Orange Crush”

So this week R.E.M. called it quits. I was a little young when R.E.M. started as a band. I didn’t really get into them until their sixth album, Green. I wasn’t a huge R.E.M., but I did like them, and own every album since Green, except for the one they released this year. “Orange Crush” was the first R.E.M. video I saw on MTV back in 1988. I was instantly hooked, their next few albums were their best, and were almost soundtracks for my high school years.

  • Flashback Friday: Foo Fighters–“I’ll Stick Around”

I saw the Foo Fighters for the fourth time this week. They are an amazing band to see live. They are one of the few 90s bands that are still going strong and making great music. Their latest album is amazing, and they played a lot from it. They played a lot overall. They played for nearly three hours in front of a sellout crowd of 13,000. There were no gimmicks, no stupid costume changes, no dancers, no computers. Just four guitars and a drummer making great rock music, and got great reviews.

“I’ll Stick Around” was the Foo’s first video from 1995. They looked so young back then. It’s great that they are still rocking the same as they always have.
