As a former band geek I kind of feel sorry for the marching band behind Rudolph.

This is such an awesome video for one of my favorite Jonathan Coulton songs. Great job Jarrett Heather.
So last December I posted a video and link to buy Tim Minchin’s amazing Christmas song “White Wine in the Sun”. Once again all money made from the song from November 21st to January 1st is going to charity.
This year in Australia, the amazing Kate Miller-Heidke covered the song for a Christmas CD for charity. Christian groups were outraged that the song was on the CD, despite the fact that proceeds go to a Christian charity. I think it’s a great song that shows Christmas is about more than religion. It’s about spending time with family whatever your religions beliefs are.
I saw Kate Miller-Heidke in concert last year and she has an amazing voice. Here is her version of the song:
And if you want to hear the song performed by Tim Minchin, here is that version:
I forgot to mention that at the Motion City Soundtrack concert Thursday night, they gave us a sneak preview of their video for “A Lifeless Ordinary” while they were setting up. It was pretty sweet watching the video as the whole crowd sang along. Well, today they released the video.
Tomorrow we are heading down to Minneapolis to see Motion City Soundtrack again. It will be our eighth time seeing them I think, it’s hard to keep count. It’s also hard to believe of all the times we have seen them, we have yet to see them at 1st Ave. 1st Ave is one of my favorite places to see concerts. There is just so much history there. Any band that is anybody has played there, plus Purple Rain was filmed there.
Getting ready for the concert I watched a few videos. The above video is the first Motion City Soundtrack song I fell in love with. It’s kind of crazy how young they look in the video. 2003 wasn’t really that long ago was it?
Fake Problems teamed up with Brian Fallon of The Gaslight Anthem to cover the Blink 182 track “Dammit” while performing live in Vancouver earlier this month. Both bands were recently in Fargo, and I am a little bummed that I missed it.
It’s a new Garfunkel and Oats song! You gotta love Garfunkel and Oats. They have an album on iTunes. It’s Great. I bought it. You should too. They have a few free songs on their website. They are great too. I downloaded them. You should too.
Tom Lehrer’s “Elements Song” has alway been full of win, but now it’s even better with Instant Google.
It’s not normally the type of music I like, but I kinda dig this song. All the charm would be lost though if they had to edit it for TV or Radio.
When I saw Ben Folds in Fargo a while back he mentioned that he was going to be making an album with Nick Hornby. This is the first song off the album that is coming out September 28th.
He calls this video a “videosong”, which means in his words:
Things You Think is (almost!) a VideoSong, a new medium with 2 rules:
1. What you see is what you hear (no lip-syncing for instruments or voice). 2. If you hear it, at some point you see it (no hidden sounds).
Oh, and I like it a lot.
**Update** Ok, I guess this song isn’t off Ben Folds’ new album. Here is a little more from Ben.
To be clear! “Things You Think” is not on the album. I know its all weird timing but I hope nobody gets the wrong idea. The album is not spoken word and in fact, Nick’s voice isn’t on the album either. Nick wrote the lyrics for the album, sent them to me, and I made music for it. The VideoSong is a totally different thing.
So Katy Perry has a song on the radio that I have heard a few time called “California Gurls”. The song is kinda meh, but there seems to be a lot of pretty funny parody songs popping up on YouTube. Since I am from Minnesota here is “Minnesota Gurls”:
And now that I am living just across the river in North Dakota here is “North Dakota Bois”:
I haven’t looked, but I am willing to bet there are Parodies for every state.
