• Ben Folds, Nick Hornby, & Pomplamoose VideoSong!!!!

When I saw Ben Folds in Fargo a while back he mentioned that he was going to be making an album with Nick Hornby. This is the first song off the album that is coming out September 28th.

He calls this video a “videosong”, which means in his words:

Things You Think is (almost!) a VideoSong, a new medium with 2 rules:
    1. What you see is what you hear (no lip-syncing for instruments or voice).
2. If you hear it, at some point you see it (no hidden sounds).

Oh, and I like it a lot.

**Update** Ok, I guess this song isn’t off Ben Folds’ new album. Here is a little more from Ben.

To be clear! “Things You Think” is not on the album. I know its all weird timing but I hope nobody gets the wrong idea. The album is not spoken word and in fact, Nick’s voice isn’t on the album either. Nick wrote the lyrics for the album, sent them to me, and I made music for it. The VideoSong is a totally different thing.

  • Sing It Loud’s “Here With You” VIdeo

I don’t know why I didn’t post this video before. Probably because in my world, Sing It Loud is a pretty popular band, but in real life they probably aren’t. They are a great band from Minneapolis that I have seen twice. I love this video because it was filmed in Minneapolis, and shows off many of the famous landmarks.

  • Not All Fairs Are Lame

I have always thought fair concerts were pretty lame. Never once have I heard of a band I wanted to see play at a fair. I guess I was wrong. Weezer and Motion City Soundtrack recently played the Ohio State Fair. I so wish I was close enough to Ohio to have gone. Scott Heiesl, who is an editor for AP Mag, went and posted a few videos. They aren’t the best quality, but sure makes me sad that I couldn’t be there.

It’s been two years since I have see Motion City Soundtrack, but have no fear, last week I bought tickets to see them in October with Saves The Day, and Say Anything. How cool will that be? I can’t wait.

  • Palmdale’s Video for Here Comes the Summer

I was a huge Letters to Cleo fan in the 90s, and have loved Kay Hanley’s solo stuff since. Recently she has formed a new band with Linus of Hollywood, who himself put out one great album in the 90s with his band Size 14. Kay and Linus are now known as Palmdale. They just recently released a digital EP titled Get Wasted. Here is their video for their first singel “Here Comes the Summer”. I love it.

  • Quirky Ukulele Music

For some reason I have really been into quirky ukulele music lately. First it was YouTuber Molly Lewis. She has some awesome videos on YouTube, and has even played with Jonathan Coulton. She has an album on iTunes, and it is definitely worth the $6.93.

Then today Motion City Soundtrack’s blog introduced me to the greatness that is Garfunkel and Oats. You can listen to all their songs and watch a bunch of videos on their website. It was another easy iTunes purchase for me.

  • My Favorite Bands

I have been on this planet for the better part of three decades now. Each decade, the 80s, 90s, and 00s, my musical tastes have changed a bit. I have one favorite band from each decade that sticks out far above the other bands I liked.

In the 80s it was Bon Jovi. I don’t know any of their new stuff, but Slippery When Wet is still one of my all time favorite albums. That tape was pretty much glued into my tape player through my middle school years. This March I will finally get to see them in concert. They played Fargo a year ago, but I didn’t want to spend the money. This time I thought what the hell, plus Dashboard Confessional is opening up for them. I love Dashboard, and they were amazing when I saw them a few years back. So after 24 years, I will finally see “Livin’ On A Prayer” live.

In the 90s it was Nirvana. I was obsessed with Nirvana in the 90s. They opened my eyes up to so much good music that never got radio play. To this day I don’t listen to much music that’s on the radio. Sadly I never got the chance to see Nirvana live.

In the 00s it was Motion City Soundtrack. They are by far my current favorite band. I have seen them 6 times and am always looking to see them again. They are playing in Minneapolis on the 23rd of January. I was going to pass on this one because traveling to the cities in the winter kinda sucks. Well, it turns out I will be in the cities that day anyway now. Sadly it looks like it’s sold out. I hope I can find tickets somewhere.

Their fourth album, and first on a major label is coming out next Tuesday, the 19th. I have already pre-ordered it on iTunes. Today they released their first video. You can watch it below. I can’t wait for the album, and hope I can find tickets.

  • Green Day

61eaitkolyl_sl500_aa240_I don’t know what it is, but I still like to buy CDs. I couldn’t tell you the last time that I actually put one in a CD player and played it though. Now days, they just get ripped and put in the closet.

Today the piece of plastic I bought was the new Green Day CD. My Green Day tickets also came in the mail today. I have seen them once before, and it was the best concert ever. I had tickets last time they were suppose to place Fargo, but they canceled. They will be here in July, and I can’t wait.

I have been a Green Day fan forever. They along with Nirvana were my gateway bands. they got me listening to a lot of great music. Back when Green Day were on Lookout! Records there were so many other great bands on Lookout!. I would pick up CD just based on the record label, and I was never disappointed. Now days with the Internet any MySpace it’s not really the same. Long gone are the days of picking up a CD and not know what it’s going to sound like. I don’t know if it’s better or worse, it’s just different. I don’t know if it’s that I am getting older, but I find myself listening to music less and less. I still go out of my way to find good music, and seldom like anything on the radio though.
