• Mount Everest

I believe I mentioned that I am catching up on old episodes of Everest: Beyond the Limit on my Roku box. That show has really piqued my interest in Mount Everest. I think the people that climb it are crazy, but it’s pretty incredible that they can. I have added a bunch of other documentaries about Everest to watch on my Roku, and today I ran across a great presentation from Dr. Ken Kamler talking about his Everest disaster of 1996.

  • I am a Better Masturbator then Mass Debater

I hate arguing with people that don’t open up their mind and listen. It’s about as productive as talking to a wall and trying to convince it to move. It’s just a wast of time, and I get too worked up over it.

In the end I guess it’s ok if you disagree with me. I can’t force you to be right.

  • At Your Funeral

So Monday was the Wife’s Grandma’s funeral. Pretty much the whole family was there. It was a sad time, but also a nice bonding time. It was quite obvious that everybody cares a great deal for everybody in their family, despite not seeing them all that often.

Grandma picked out almost every detail of her funeral from the songs, and singer, right down to the casket color inside and out. That got me thinking about my death.

Do people really care about their own funeral?

I personally could care less. I don’t really care what they do with my body. I probably prefer to be cremated, just because I would take up less space that way. I am not religious, but if they want a religious funeral go ahead. The funeral is for them anyway. Once I am dead, I won’t know any better anyway. The only thing I really care about is not having a religious symbol on my headstone or urn. That lives on for an eternity, and I don’t want my name next to a religious symbol. Anything else you want to do for my funeral, go for it.

I kind of think of it like our wedding. The Wife and I didn’t need any wedding or vows to prove our love. We got married in a church for our families. Most of our families are Christian, so we pretty much did it for them. That may sound wrong to do, but I am a big fan of traditions. In my eyes, our wedding was more of a traditional thing rather than a religious thing. It’s sad that it’s so hard to avoid religion in our society. It’s wrong that I feel like an outcast for not being religious. Hopefully that starts to change as more people start questioning religion.

  • Goodbye Grandma

So my Wife’s Grandma finally passed away last night. It’s sad, but it’s kind of a relief. She was in a lot of pain these last few weeks, and hardly slept. It was also taking a toll on my Wife’s Grandpa. He is in he 80s and doesn’t really need the stress. Her daughter from Arizona that was living with us, was also very stressed. She felt uncomfortable living with us, and really wanted to go back to Arizona and her job. Just a few days ago Grandma was looking pretty strong and we had no idea how much longer she was going to live. The one good thing is she passed before the holidays. My wife has a hard time during the holidays because her other two Grandmas passed right around Christmas.

The next few days are going to be busy with family and funeral plans, but we knew it was coming, so will be nice to get it over with. I am sure everybody agrees with me, but funerals suck.

  • No Raise For Me

So it’s that time of the year at work where we review our benefits and get everything setup for next year. I have been at my job for 12 years, and this will be the first time we don’t get a cost of living raise on the first of the year. Maybe the recession is finally hitting us a bit. The good thing is our health insurance isn’t going up for the first time in 12 years also. Usually our heath insurance goes up enough that you don’t even notice the cost of living raise. All of our deductibles our going up though, so the insurance companies are still getting more money. I have never used enough insurance to even get close to my deductible, so the increase doesn’t really affect me much. The shocking thing was that our life insurance actually went down a few dollars a month. I have never had any kind of insurance actually go down in price.

I shouldn’t complain though. I am lucky, and thankful that I have a good paying job, with no chance of losing it.

  • The End

I’m not sure if I blogged about my Wife’s Grandpa’s Wife on here or not. She isn’t technically my Wife’s Grandma, but she has been married to her Grandpa for more of my Wife’s life then her real Grandma was. Her Grandma died of cancer in the 80s. Now her second Grandma is dieing of cancer.

Early this year they were staying with us while she was going through treatment in town. They thought they got the cancer in her throat, but then found some in her hip. She has been in a nursing home for the past month because the treatment had made her bones so brittle a simple bump could break something. Two weeks ago they found cancer in her liver. She is so weak now treatment isn’t really an option. It’s only a matter of time now.

When my Wife visited her last night she wasn’t doing so well. She thanked my Wife for all the help we have given them, and she gave her the afghan that she made while in the nursing home.

This weekend her daughter from Arizona is coming up here and will be staying with us for who knows how long. So I guess we will have another house guest for a while. It will be a little bit inconvenient, but you got to do what you got to do to help your family out.

It will be sad when she goes, but it will also be the end of her suffering. She is 83 and lived the long and productive life we all hope for. The end is always sad, but we all have to face it.

  • New Phones

So it’s time again to upgrade our cell phones. This time we are both getting Blackberries since iPhones aren’t available around here. The Wife got hers yesterday, but I couldn’t because the phone I wanted two years ago was out of stock, so my upgrade date got pushed back a few weeks. I figured that would happen, and they said they couldn’t do anything for me in the store other then sell me the phone at full price.

Today I decided to email Verizon’s customer support to see what they could do. I few hours after I sent the email I got a call. It was the best customer service call I have ever taken. She had no problem upgrading me since it’s so close. She even put a rush on it to get it shipped out today. I should have it by Thursday or Friday.

I haven’t been a huge Verizon fan, but they have the best coverage around here, and that’s what count when it comes to a cell phone. I am a bigger fan now. Now I just hope they get iPhones in two years.

  • Jobs

Last Friday my supervisor at work retired after 44 years of work. I couldn’t imagine working at the same place for 44 years, but if I stay there until I retire I will be close to it. Chances are I will be too. I like my job, I make decent money, and I like this city.

I have only had two jobs in my life. Three if you count the paper route that I had before I was sixteen. I started my paper route when I was 11. Having a paper route takes lots of dedication. It only took 45 minutes every morning for me to do my route, but it had to be done EVERY morning. So from the age of 11 to 16, I was up at 6:00 AM every day to deliver my papers. There were time when I had to get a substitute, but then there were times with I substituted on other routes too.

I started working at a restaurant when I turned 16. I started as a dishwasher, and worked my way up to the top cook. That also took a lot of dedication because it involved working every weekend. I worked there for seven years, and only called in sick once. It was tough when the employees had to work shorthanded, so I never wanted to do that to them. I worked at that restaurant until I graduated college, and got my current job.

I am on my 12th year at my current job. It is also a job that required some dedication. It’s a 24 hour a day, seven days a week operation. Someone has to be there at all times, so it involves working nights, weekends, and holidays. I have taken a few more sick days at this job though. We get sick days, and working 12 hour shifts sick is no fun.

So I guess I am a creature of habit and don’t like change. Not many 34 year olds can say they have only had two jobs since they were 16. I will have to work until the age of 67 to get 44 years in. Who knows what age I will be able to retire at? I haven’t really looked into it much. Honestly I’m in no hurry to retire. I like to keep busy. I guess I could always find things to do, but I am afraid I will get bored retired. I don’t see myself being a Wal-Mart Greater either.

  • New Shirt

Every day I check out shirt.woot.com and see what their shirt of the day is. Last week they had a cool one, so I bought it.
    New Shirt from Woot!
It’s a spaceman holding a flag up on the Sun.

For some reason I felt like reading the tag. In small words on the tag is says, “Not to be used as pants.”. I love when companies do funny shit like that.

  • Back From Denver

We got back from Denver Monday, but today has been my first chance to get any computer time. We had a great time in Denver, but the weather could have been better.

Friday right after we got there we toured Invesco Field. It was pretty cool to see parts of the stadium that most people don’t see. We were able to see the party suites, press boxes, visitors locker room, and many other areas. It would have been cooler to see some of the private suites, and Broncos locker room, but those areas were off limits for tours.

Saturday was my Sister’s Graduation. It was your normal standard graduation. Nothing too exciting. After graduation we hung out in a local park. That evening we went to the Denver Aquarium. I wasn’t expecting much, but it was a pretty cool Aquarium.

Sunday we went to Pikes Peak. Nine years ago we went to Pikes Peak in October and it was amazing. This time it wasn’t so great. It was cloudy, so we couldn’t see much. We were in clouds and only had a few breaks in the clouds where we could see. There was also a lot more snow up there this time of year. After Pikes Peak we drove around the Garden of the Gods. We could have gotten some cool pictures, but it was raining. Oh well, I am sure we will be back sometime.

Monday we flew back and it was raining in Fargo. They said it was a good weekend here, but we missed it. The rain followed us around.

I can’t wait to go back to Denver. We really like the area. If there was another city we could live in it would probably be Denver. Well, maybe not Denver, but a smaller city near by. Sometimes I wish I could just pick up and move, but I really like where we are now also.
