• My take on the Aurora tragedy

I’ve been reading Twitter all day, but couldn’t come up with words that haven’t already been said about today’s tragedy. I use to live in Aurora. Now that city will forever be attached to this horrible event just like Littleton is.

What drives me nuts about these events is how different groups are quick to blame, or use the tragedy to force their agenda. People will blame video games, movies, TV, or even Marilyn Manson. The right blames gun control and believe this wouldn’t happen if everybody was carrying a gun. The left thinks we need more gun control to keeps the guns off the streets.

I’m not a gun guy, but I think our gun laws are probably just fine. With the exception to assault rifles that is. Is there a logical reason to own an assault rifle? Stricter gun laws would only punish the 99.9% of the responsible gun owners. The criminals will always find their way to get guns. We shouldn’t let dumbasses limit the rights of honest Americans.

In reality we will probably never know what causes these tragedies, but one thing we could try is not making these guys famous. The cable news networks are always looking for big stories, so when something like this happens they sensationalize the shit out of them, turning the shooter into a celebrity. This can’t be good, and a simple change in reporting could prevent future shootings without taking away any innocent person’s rights.

The sad reality is that this is the cost of freedom. As long as we have our freedoms, things like this are going to happen. To put it into perspective, there are probably 100s of people killed in car accidents daily, and who know how many horrific events that happen in other countries that don’t make our news.

Also, did you notice that the terrorism word hasn’t come up? Probably because it was a white guy, but that’s another story.

  • Out-of-context clips failing to make Mr. Wizard look like a dick

I ran across this video on io9 of out-of-context clips of Mr. Wizard being a dick. Mr. Wizard was so great, that even the out-of-context clips barely make him look like a dick. It’s funny that someone tried to make him look like a dick, but it’s more fun to get a glimpse back into my childhood. I remembered every single one of these episodes. Mr. Wizard was my favorite as a kid. I could never get enough of Mr. Wizard’s World.

  • New Music Saturday: We Are the In Crowd

I’ve been a fan of We Are the In Crowd for what seems like forever. In my world they are a pretty big band, and I assume most people know about them. In reality, that’s probably not true. This video is their latest off their debut full length album, Best Intentions.

  • Monday through Friday jobs suck; Goodbye Digg

I don’t know why people like Monday through Friday jobs so much. I worked my rare Monday through Friday this week and it sucked. I would take my nights and weekends over Monday through Friday any day. My normal shifts are 12 hours, and usually only two or three days in a row at most. Working five days in a row is a killer. Sure they were only eight hour days, but still five days in a row sucks, and now I only have a two day weekend. Normally my weekends off are always three day weekends.

I feel like I had no time for podcast listening, RSS reading, or Twitter all week. Thankfully I’m back to my normal schedule next week.

In other news, I logged into Digg for the first time in years, and dugg my last article. It was fun while it lasted, but like everything, it has an ending.

  • How we use to buy music

This video brings back so many memories. Remember waiting in line until 12:00 AM on Tuesdays to pick up your favorite album seconds after it was released? Remember buying CDs in those long boxes? Remember spending actual cash in stores? Remember being cool with your mullet and stone washed jean jacket?

Yeah, that was totally me back in the day, except I wasn’t a big enough fan of Guns N’ Roses to wait in line. I have those albums. I just didn’t wait in line for them.

    (Thanks for the memories mental_floss)

  • New Music Saturday: TAT

I feel I’m a little late to the game with this band. I discovered them maybe six months ago. Sure you may not have heard of TAT, but they have been a band since 2003, and their one full length album came out in 2008. They also have a bunch of EPs out. Their acoustic EP is especially amazing. You can check out more of their awesomeness on their YouTube page. They are literally the best new band that I have discovered in years.

  • San Diego fireworks fail

I’ve always thought it would be cool if a fireworks show lit off all of the fireworks at once. I guess that happened last night in San Diego. Do to a technical error, fifteen minutes of fireworks were set off and took fifteen seconds.

After seeing that, I no longer think it would be cool too see all the fireworks launched at once, but it still must have been a sight to see.

  • HFCS or Sugar

A day probably doesn’t go by without me hearing some fear mongering over high fructose corn syrup. Should you eat the stuff? No, just like sugar, you should try to avoid it when possible, but it’s not a toxic poison.

In the above video, the latest episode of inFact, Brian Dunning doesn’t go too in-depth about the science, but does explain the difference between HFCS and sugar, quite well.
