New Music Saturday: TAT
I feel I’m a little late to the game with this band. I discovered them maybe six months ago. Sure you may not have heard of TAT, but they have been a band since 2003, and their one full length album came out in 2008. They also have a bunch of EPs out. Their acoustic EP is especially amazing. You can check out more of their awesomeness on their YouTube page. They are literally the best new band that I have discovered in years.

San Diego fireworks fail
I’ve always thought it would be cool if a fireworks show lit off all of the fireworks at once. I guess that happened last night in San Diego. Do to a technical error, fifteen minutes of fireworks were set off and took fifteen seconds.
After seeing that, I no longer think it would be cool too see all the fireworks launched at once, but it still must have been a sight to see.

HFCS or Sugar
A day probably doesn’t go by without me hearing some fear mongering over high fructose corn syrup. Should you eat the stuff? No, just like sugar, you should try to avoid it when possible, but it’s not a toxic poison.
In the above video, the latest episode of inFact, Brian Dunning doesn’t go too in-depth about the science, but does explain the difference between HFCS and sugar, quite well.

New Music Saturday: Candy Hearts
I’m going to start using Saturdays as the day that I post new music that I am really digging lately, if I remember. Today that band is Candy Hearts. I don’t know if they have any official videos. I couldn’t find any. The above video is an acoustic live performance of their song “Lighter Than the Air” off their latest album, Everything’s Amazing & Nobody’s happy. You gotta love an album named from a Louis C.K. bit, but it’s even better because it contains some great songs too. You can probably pick it up wherever you get your music, but I got it from their Bandcamp site.

Google+ Virtual Star Parties
I love Google+. I don’t post to it all that often, but I’m always reading it, and many of the hangouts people have are cool. My favorite hangouts are Fraser Cain’s Virtual Star Parties every Sunday night. He has amateur astronomers all around the world that hook up their telescopes and broadcast them into Google+.
Google created the above video, and showed it at the Google I/O conference yesterday. Hopefully this will bring even more attention to the great work Fraser and Co. are doing on Google+.

Challenges of Getting to Mars: Curiosity’s Seven Minutes of Terror
It’s pretty amazing what NASA can do to land on Mars. I’m going to be keeping my fingers crossed on August 5th. It’s looks like a complicated landing. Hopefully everything works out, and we can learn much more about the red planet.

Remembering the football playing days
So today a Facebook friend posted a picture of the picture of our 1991 conference champion team in the trophy case at my old high school. That was my junior year in high school. We had a really good football team that year. I remember it like it was yesterday. It’s hard to believe it’s been 21 years. It’s nice to know we are still in the trophy case. My senior year playing football was a bit more disappointing. We were good, but we had a few key injuries and lost a couple of games so we didn’t win the conference. My last football game was in a playoff loss to a team that we use to always beat. To this day, not a day goes by without me thinking about it. I remember all of us bawling in the locker room. We weren’t crying because we lost. It was just a stupid game. We were crying because that was the last time most of us would be strapping that helmet on. We would never bash heads on the football field again. We would never be teammates again. Just typing that brings tears to my eyes. I don’t know what it is about playing football, but they were some special times. Seeing that picture makes me think that somewhere we are still teammates, still bashing heads, and having a great time on the field. It was 21 years ago, but feels like yesterday.
A lot has changed since then. They have a new high school, new football field, new football conference, and new mascot. It’s nothing like the “good ol’ days”, but these are the “good ol’ days” to the kids that weren’t even born yet when we were bawling our eyes out in that locker room. To them, that picture from 1991 could just as well be black and white. Ancient history. To me that picture means everything, it was just yesterday.

Spotify in the 80s
I like Spotify, but it’s not for me because I like to own my music, and had problems finding all the bands I like on Spotify. This video is of how Spotify would have been like in the 80s. It’s pretty funny. I totally remember those days.
