Alt-Med Quackery
I’m sure some of you have heard the story of that Indian man that says he has lived 70 years without eating or drinking anything. It’s pretty obvious to anybody with a third grade education that that’s complete bullshit; yet, people still believe. I have a friend on Facebook that totally believes it. He thinks we can get all our energy from the sun and don’t need to eat or drink. He even wants to attempt it.
More people need to learn how to think critically. If it sounds too crazy, chances are it’s not true.
Over the weekend I saw an infomercial by Kevin Trudeau pushing his book of “Alternative Medicine” nonsense. Pretty much all the “Alternative Medicine” crap is nonsense. It’s one of the things that drives me crazy, probably because my Mom and Brother believe it all, and are always sending me links to the nonsense.
Today my Brother sent me a link about some exercises you can do 10 minutes every other day, and lose all kinds of weight. I watched a few seconds of the video and the guy said you keep burning fat the rest of the day, and then next day from the exercises. Really? To me that sounds like nonsense, so I looked up the guy, and of course he was selling all the usual “Alternative Medicine” crap on his website.
For some reason people think that “Big Pharma” is out to get them; yet have no qualms about spending three time the money on some “Natural”, “Alternative”, unregulated crap that does nothing. The “Alternative Medicine” companies are actually the ones that are in it for the money, and they are really good advertising their goods. They always advertise no side effects –because there is no active ingredients — and they are cure-alls — since it doesn’t do anything, just list everything and if someone gets better from one than it worked. Taking alt-meds usually is harmless and just a waste of money, but recently another quack Gary Null almost killed himself taking his own supplements. And that’s another way to spot a quack. They all usually sell their own supplements, or books, or website subscription; because really, they are in it just for the money.
Living a healthy live is really simple; eat healthy, exercise, and get your sleep in. That’s it. There are no shortcuts, and no need for supplements, or drugs unless you have a medical condition diagnosed by a real doctor, and not a quack.

LipDub at Calvin College
via vimeo.comThis is an amazing video that a bunch of kids made for The Rocket Summer song “So Much Love”. It’s far better than a lot of professionally shot videos.

Mr. Rogers is a evil Man? WTF?
via youtube.comI am sure most of you have seen this video already. This is yet another reason why I have Fox News removed from my channel guide. Sadly there are a lot of people that like the crap that’s on Fox News. Maybe it’s because they consider themselves informed because they watch the “News”, even though it’s all entertainment and very little news. Maybe because it’s dumbed down to something their feeble little minds can understand. I don’t know, but I believe Fox News has some of this highest ratings for a news network. Just more proof that it’s not news if you ask me.
Sadly CNN isn’t much better since it’s all about ratings and not actually reporting the news.
And we all wonder why Americans don’t know what’s going on in the world?

First of May
Since it’s May 1st, it’s time for some Jonathan Coulton. It’s NSFW, but such a great song.

Hawaii in July
So the Wife and I have been talking about spending our 10 year wedding anniversary in Hawaii for over a year now. This week we finally starting booking it. We have been fortunate enough to have been able to take a vacation every year that we have been married so far. Most of them have been pretty affordable. We always try to get the most out of our money on vacations.
Hawaii will be a different story. There will be nothing cheap about this vacation, but I guess you only have one 10 year anniversary. We did have enough miles built up on our credit card to get one of our hotel stays for free. That’s not too bad since it’s $120 a night for four nights. We want to see as much as possible for the week we are spending there, so we are spending four days on Oahu, and four days on the Big Island.
On Oahu we will be staying in Honolulu right on Waikiki beach. Our only plan so far is to visit Pearl Harbor, and get our beach time in. Neither of us are big fans of beaches, so we won’t be spending much time on the beaches.
On the Big Island we are staying in Hilo, which I hear doesn’t have great beaches, but that’s fine with us. It’s closer to the volcanoes, which we plan on spending a day at. I talked the wife out of spending extra money on ocean side rooms, and use that money on something funner like a helicopter ride, so we are planning that. I also would like to spend an evening star gazing on Mauna Kea.
There is so much to do, and so much we want to do. It’s going to be tough to narrow it down. It will be a usual non-relaxing vacation for us. Neither of us like to sit around and do nothing. We always want to see and do as much as possible. We can relax when we get home.
